This chaotically embroidered mandala is the first test of embroidery with the help of a circular paper grid. The addition of beads was also tested. This is an experiment in the larger mandala project.

Recently Marc and I tried our hand at batik dyeing to make two silk panels for a large family project to make a quilt for one of Marc’s cousins who is getting married. Congratulations James and Nicola!

The photos here show the two panels being painted with wax and dye in leaf patterns traced from photos of our garden. One panel shows a morning glory vine and the other shows hydrangea leafs. The dyes were special – Marc’s grandfather worked on creating them!

Geom 1 painted paper sculpture by Marc Ngui. This one is about the size of a football. This Geom was made to be part of a larger installation of textile art and paper sculptures called The Reef, on display 27 to 30 October 2011 at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto for the annual upART Contemporary Art Fair.

Sculptures for “The Genomic Basis of Parallel Evolution in Three-spined Sticklebacks”

These guys were commisioned by fellow Flickerite Frenquency to commemorate the end of his PhD studies of this fish species. He studied the evolutionary loss of pelvic spines and was able to switch the relevant genes back on, producing fish with one or both perlvic spines. The thesis title was “The Genomic Basis of Parallel Evolution in Three-spined Sticklebacks”.
